![]() ![]() The Model 1890 would later form the basis of the later Model 1906 and Model 62 slide action rifles. Long considered the standard gun to be used at shooting galleries and ranges, the Model 1890 earned the nickname of " gallery gun". As with most Winchester firearms at the time, the Model 1890 had a number of special order options such as checkered stocks and pistol gripped stocks. " You said it wouldn't work, but it seems to shoot pretty fair to me." ĭespite not being the first successful slide action rifle ( Colt had been producing slide action rifles for a number of years prior to the introduction of the Model 1890), the Model 1890 was an instant success and eventually became the most successful slide action rifle of all time, with 854,747 produced from its debut in 1890 until the end of production in 1932, with the final stocks cleared out by 1941. Soon after, Browning created a model of his rifle and submitted it to Winchester, allegedly with the following note: Īfter receiving the design drawings, Winchester attempted to dissuade Browning from continuing with the project as they felt that his new creation would not work. This time, however, he would instead submit design drawings for his new weapon. Before he designed this weapon, Browning would turn in a model of a gun to Winchester for them to evaluate and put into production. I have to say the Rossi is ever bit as good as I remember my Win 62 being, it just doesn't say Winchester on the barrel.Designed in 1888 by John Browning and his brother Matthew, the Model 1890 was conceived as a replacement for the rimfire Model 1873 which had not been selling as well as the company had expected. I had a 1953 year model 62 I bought as a teenager at one time (stolen) and bought a used Rossi clone in 1980 to replace it. I lucked into a 1906 2-3 years ago from a co-worker. I can see why those bucks are such treasures. I also had to practically sign my name in blood when I checked it out but it was worth it. It cost me $2.75 to read the book for 3 weeks. My library had to go all the way to Arkansas to find a loaner. The book really chronicles all the minute changes to the models through the years. The Winchester '06 was a dollar and change cheaper, but that was enough, along with the brand name, to prevent the Savage pump from receiving great popularity. As I recall, the 1906 was introduced as a little bit cheaper rifle than the Mdl 1890 to counter Savage's introduction of their. ![]() I borrowed one of the Winchester Slide Action books through the local library a couple years back. Early 1906 guns had a smooth fore end.later ones were grooved. All this based on my less than perfect memory.Īll in all, the 1906 was designed as a cheaper, smaller gun for young boys, etc. The 1906 was initially offered in short caliber, but later was offered with a modified carrier to accept short, long, and long rifle ammunition. Another difference.the 1890 was only offered in single calibers including short, long, and WRF early on with the long rifle coming along much later. The earliest model 1906 basically had the second model 1890 receiver, but most model 1906's have the same receiver as the third model 1890. The most common version was the third model that had the receiver modified for a stronger lock up on the bolt/receiver. early versions also had case hardened receivers. A few years later, they came out with a take down model. There were three versions of the 1890 with the earliest being a sold frame non-take down model with case hardened receiver. The 1890 also offered more custom options to the customer. ![]() The 1890 used walnut throughout it's production range.the 1906 sometimes used gum wood for stock material.particularly in the early models. The 1890 had a 24" octagon barrel instead of a 20" round barrel. The 1890 had a steel buttplate compared to the composite buttplate of the 1906. ![]()
